Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
It is important for physicians to recognize and address potential cross-cultural communication barriers with their patients. Several studies have demonstrated the importance of trained medical interpreters for ensuring effective patient-provider communication. Medical interpreters also represent an untapped source of insight into common communication problems. Such insights can contribute to strengthening physicians’ cross cultural communication skills. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
It is essential that the Government’s strategies for tackling crime and drug misuse provide services and interventions to all those who need them, including engaging all of Britain’s diverse communities. This manual is intended as a tool that may be employed by regional crime and drug teams and local partnerships to assist in: – understanding the legislation requiring public sector bodies to eliminate discrimination and promote equality; – identifying key tasks relating to diversity; – identifying the needs of all local communities; – engaging local communities; and – delivering services appropriate to the needs of specific communities. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
It is difficult to draw causal conclusions about the effectiveness of secondary prevention programs for adolescents at risk, when the programs use a variety of different interventions. The Action Plan is an instrument that is designed to make collection of such data possible. This allows calculating different kinds of intervention patterns for each participant and program, which, in combination with outcome measures, gives an estimate of successful vs. less successful interventions. The study compared intervention patterns from 12 different sites in a national intervention program in Switzerland. The program, called supra-f (www.supra-f.ch), started in 1999 and will end in 2005. Results are presented from the ongoing study with approximately 600 adolescents. We calculated effect sizes (ES) to compare interventions with outcome measures. Effect sizes (ES) are presented on well being, coping, self-esteem, delinquency, and substance use (cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis) in relation to intervention packages, risk groups (low, moderate, high), and age (two groups: 11-15 and 16-20 years of age) using data collected from 1999-2002. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
Investing in prevention and improved control of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) will reduce premature death and preventable morbidity and disability, and improve the quality of life and well-being of people and societies. No less than 86% of deaths and 77% of the disease burden in the WHO European Region are caused by this broad group of disorders, which show an epidemiological distribution with great inequalities reflecting a social gradient, while they are linked by common risk factors, underlying determinants and opportunities for intervention. This document contains an action plan for implementation of the European Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases. Taking account of Members States’ existing commitments, it focuses on priority action areas and interventions for the next five years (2012–2016) within a comprehensive and integrated framework. It has been developed through a consultative process, guided by the Standing Committee of the Regional Committee, and including meetings of NCD focal points and of the European Health Policy Forum for High-Level Government Officials. Its formulation has taken place against a backdrop of development of the new European health policy (Health 2020) and the Public Health Framework for Action, as well as the First Global Ministerial Conference on Healthy Lifestyles and Noncommunicable Disease Control (Moscow, April 2011) and the United Nations high-level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases (New York, September 2011) and takes account of these processes. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
