Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
Papers review findings emanating from the May 18-19 conference on ’Needle Sharing Among Intravenous Drug Abusers: National and International Perspectives’ held in Bethesda, Maryland. Topics include epidemiological data regarding AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among intravenous drug abusers in the United States and Europe and drug abuse and injection practices among intravenous drug abusers in New York City, San Francisco, and the Southwest region of the United States. Papers address the implications of drug policy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for controlling needle sharing, the influence of AIDS upon drug use practices in the United Kingdom, and that country’s efforts to make sterile injection equipment readily available. Additional papers focus on the implications for AIDS prevention among intravenous drug abusers in France; review of Federal and State laws regulating the availability and use of hypodermic needles and syringes within the U.S.; and consider implications of legislation and enforcement practices for the prevention of AIDS transmission. It was recommended that communities across the United States implement programs to educate addicts about their risk for AIDS and ways to reduce it and that resources be expanded so drug abuse treatment is readily available. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
Over the past 50 years, anecdotal reports linking cannabis sativa (marijuana) and psychosis have been steadily accumulating, giving rise to the notion of “cannabis psychosis.” Despite this historic connection, marijuana often is regarded as a “soft drug” with few harmful effects. However, this benign view is now being revised, along with mounting research demonstrating a clear association between cannabis and psychosis. In this article, I review evidence on marijuana’s impact on the risk of developing psychotic disorders, as well as the potential contributions of “medical” marijuana and other legally available products containing synthetic cannabinoids to psychosis risk. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |
Over the next decade an increasing number of new “pharmacotherapy” medications will become available with the potential to tremendously impact the use and abuse of illegal drugs and the overall direction of national and international drug policy. These pharmacotherapy medications are designed to block or significantly reduce the “highs” elicited by illegal drugs. Used as part of a drug treatment program, pharmacotherapy medications may provide valuable assistance for people seeking a chemical aid in limiting or eliminating problem drug use. However, the tremendously politicized nature of the “drug war” raises substantial concerns that, in addition to those who choose to use such medications, some people will be compelled to use them. In the absence of extraordinary circumstances, governmental action forcing or coercing a person to use a pharmacotherapy drug would violate a number of constitutional guarantees and other legal rights protecting people from forced medical treatment. Among the rights implicated by compulsory use of pharmacotherapy drugs are the right to informed consent, the right to bodily integrity and privacy, the protection against cruel and unusual punishment, and the right to freedom of thought. |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |

Abstract ![Sorted by Abstract field, descending order (down)](img/sort_desc.gif) |

Once seen as a “glamour” drug used by the very wealthy, cocaine is readily available and affordable for almost everyone. The rock form – called “crack” – has heralded this change and the results are devastating. Here’s what you should know about this powerful drug, and what can be done to combat its use. |
