Abstract: Papers review findings emanating from the May 18-19 conference on ’Needle Sharing Among Intravenous Drug Abusers: National and International Perspectives’ held in Bethesda, Maryland. Topics include epidemiological data regarding AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among intravenous drug abusers in the United States and Europe and drug abuse and injection practices among intravenous drug abusers in New York City, San Francisco, and the Southwest region of the United States. Papers address the implications of drug policy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for controlling needle sharing, the influence of AIDS upon drug use practices in the United Kingdom, and that country’s efforts to make sterile injection equipment readily available. Additional papers focus on the implications for AIDS prevention among intravenous drug abusers in France; review of Federal and State laws regulating the availability and use of hypodermic needles and syringes within the U.S.; and consider implications of legislation and enforcement practices for the prevention of AIDS transmission. It was recommended that communities across the United States implement programs to educate addicts about their risk for AIDS and ways to reduce it and that resources be expanded so drug abuse treatment is readily available.

Abstract: Over the next decade an increasing number of new “pharmacotherapy” medications will become available with the potential to tremendously impact the use and abuse of illegal drugs and the overall direction of national and international drug policy. These pharmacotherapy medications are designed to block or significantly reduce the “highs” elicited by illegal drugs. Used as part of a drug treatment program, pharmacotherapy medications may provide valuable assistance for people seeking a chemical aid in limiting or eliminating problem drug use. However, the tremendously politicized nature of the “drug war” raises substantial concerns that, in addition to those who choose to use such medications, some people will be compelled to use them. In the absence of extraordinary circumstances, governmental action forcing or coercing a person to use a pharmacotherapy drug would violate a number of constitutional guarantees and other legal rights protecting people from forced medical treatment. Among the rights implicated by compulsory use of pharmacotherapy drugs are the right to informed consent, the right to bodily integrity and privacy, the protection against cruel and unusual punishment, and the right to freedom of thought.

Abstract: Online-Sexsucht. Erotische und pornografische Bilder und Filme sind im Internet in beliebigen Mengen zu finden. Vor allem Männer konsumieren diese in teilweise exzessiver Weise. In Zürich hat sich letzte Woche eine Fachtagung mit einem Phänomen beschäftigt, das wissenschaftlich noch kaum erforscht ist.

Abstract: Online-Glücksspiele werden auf dem Glücksspielmarkt immer wichtiger. Viele junge SpielerInnen machen ihre ersten Erfahrungen mit Glücksspielen im Internet. Diese Entwicklung ist problematisch, weil solche Spiele aufgrund ihrer Eigenschaften ein erhöhtes Gefährdungspotenzial für eine Suchtentwicklung aufweisen. Seitens der Prävention werden deshalb vermehrt Konzepte und Massnahmen gefordert, die ein problematisches Spielen gar nicht erst aufkommen lassen.

Abstract: Online sein ist nicht nur ein Phänomen unserer Zeit, sondern für einen Teil der Bevölkerung auch ein soziales und gesundheitliches Problem. Dabei ist der Begriff Internetsucht eine Zusammenfassung teils ganz unterschiedlicher Aktivitäten und Problematiken, so etwa Internetpornographie, Nutzung sozialer Onlinenetzwerke, Online-Glücksspiel, Internetgaming, Surfen bzw. Absuchen von Onlinedatenbanken. Jede einzelne dieser Tätigkeiten kann dabei pathologische Ausprägungen annehmen. Zwei AutorInnengruppen präsentieren neue Erkenntnisse zu unterschiedlichen Aspekten der Internetsucht; Hormes und KollegInnen gehen der Frage einer abhängigen Nutzung sozialer Netzwerke nach, während Rehbein und KollegInnen das Internetgaming Jugendlicher näher untersuchten. Eine Übersichtsarbeit von Rehbein und Mitarbeitenden liefert Denkanstösse und Anregungen für die Prävention.
