Title Treatment and care for older drug users Type Report
Year 2010 Publication Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 31
Keywords target group; elderly; old age; drug user; addiction; AOD use, abuse, and dependence; chemical addiction; demographic change; treatment and maintenance; health care delivery; Europe
Abstract ’Drug problems have no age limits’ – This special review published alongside the 2010 Annual report, reveals why drug use is no longer simply a ‘youth phenomenon’. Europe is experiencing a pronounced ageing of its population, around a quarter of which will be aged 65 or over by 2050. Statistics published today show that Europe’s drug-using population is also ageing and that meeting the needs of older drug users is a growing issue for treatment services. This is particularly the case in western countries which saw the EU’s first heroin epidemics in the 1980s and 1990s.

Title Problem amphetamine and methamphetamine use in Europe Type Report
Year 2010 Publication Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 35
Keywords addiction; AOD use, abuse, and dependence; chemical addiction; amphetamines; methamphetamines; history; drug trafficking; AOD supply; other drug laws; AOD effects and consequences; Europe
Abstract Focusing on European countries where amphetamine or methamphetamine is an important part of the drug problem, this Selected issue looks at the current situation in the light of the historical development of amphetamines use since the introduction of these substances as medicines in the 1930s. The history of amphetamines use is the result of an interplay of global forces, such as the spread of recreational drug use in the 1960s and the arrival of heroin on the European drug scene in the 1970s, and local events such as the rise of small-scale pervitin (methamphetamine) production in what was then Czechoslovakia. The outcome of this is that, in the present day, problem amphetamines use across Europe is marked by strong national characteristics, possibly more so than any other of the major illicit drugs.

Title Treatment demand indicator (TDI) : standard protocol 3.0 : guidelines for reporting data on people entering drug treatment in European countries Type Report
Year 2012 Publication Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 74
Keywords addiction; harm reduction; treatment and maintenance; heroin-assisted treatment; methadone; quality control; recommendations or guidelines; database; international area; Europe; report
Abstract This Manual is a revised edition of the Treatment demand indicator (TDI) protocol version 2.0 and presents updated guidelines for reporting data on people entering drug treatment in Europe. The TDI is one of five key epidemiological indicators which provide a common European methodology for collecting and reporting core data on the number and profiles of those entering specialised drug treatment each year. TDI data are routinely used in EMCDDA analysis of the drug situation in Europe, helping to identify trends and patterns in problem drug use and to assess the use and uptake of treatment facilities.

Title Users' voices : experiences and perceptions of European drug users on controlling their drug consumption Type Report
Year 2012 Publication Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 32
Keywords addiction; drug user; monitoring; treatment and maintenance; individual differences; international differences; international area; Europe
Abstract A collection of narratives from substance users in Europe about their attempts to control or reduce their consumption is released today by the EMCDDA. Entitled Users’ voices, the paper illustrates how qualitative research can provide glimpses into the experiences and perceptions of substance users that statistics alone cannot provide.Organization in 1986 (WHO, 1986). Quotations, gleaned from interviews with substance users in Europe, help to focus on their total needs by providing glimpses into the different ways individuals attempt to control or reduce their consumption of drugs or alcohol. This paper does not attempt to assess the relative efficacy of any specific drug or alcohol approach or intervention: its purpose is to highlight the fact that there is enormous heterogeneity in different individual experiences and the quotations used give voice to some of these very different experiences. In this way, quotations provide important insights and meaning into the figures on prevalence of drug use and treatment statistics.
