Abstract |
Le présent document propose la perspective des usagers sur les services qu’ils ont reçus dans le cadre du Programme expérimental sur le jeu pathologique. Cette étude vise spécifiquement à explorer le processus et les raisons qui mènent à demander des services de traitement, à s’impliquer ou non dans les activités proposées et à maintenir ou non les acquis sur le contrôle des comportements de jeu excessif et des problèmes connexes. Cette recherche qualitative met donc une emphase toute particulière sur le cheminement de ces joueurs et leurs opinions sur les services reçus et sur ceux à développer. Il ressort de cette étude que les joueurs qui décident de consulter le font habituellement en dernier recours et sous le poids du découragement ou de l’impuissance devant leur situation. Ils veulent retrouver une « vie normale » et apprendre à se contrôler ou bien comprendre la passion qui les ramène inlassablement dans le cercle vicieux du jeu. Cependant, il s’avère que plusieurs usagers doivent s’y reprendre à plus d’une fois pour atteindre leur but et que les rechutes, les retours au jeu et les abandons de thérapie sont fréquents. Plusieurs d’entre eux mentionnent le manque de profondeur du programme, le peu de disponibilité, les trop longues périodes d’attente avant de recevoir de l’aide qui en découragent plus d’un ou le manque de soutien et de suivi après la thérapie. Pourtant, tous ceux qui arrivent à s’en sortir sont très reconnaissants à l’égard de leur intervenant ou de l’organisme qui les a aidés. Ils relatent des changements très marqués sur le plan personnel, relationnel, financier ou professionnel et disent avoir grandement apprécié les conseils qu’ils ont reçus pour se contrôler, considèrent qu’ils ont été écoutés et acceptés et ont retrouvé leur estime d’eux-mêmes. La très grande diversité qui existe quant aux types de joueurs, la spécificité des problèmes éprouvés par ces personnes, la divergence de leurs besoins et de leurs attentes à l’égard des services désirés ainsi que les raisons qui les incitent à demander de l’aide pour régler leurs difficultés liées au jeu font que les services auraient avantage à être mieux adaptés à la réalité de chacun. Il serait donc important de développer des services flexibles qui permettent un maximum d’ajustement et de latitude. This document gives gamblers’ perspectives on the services they have received as part of the experimental program for pathological gambling. The study specifically aims to explore their thought processes and reasons for seeking help, why they may or may not follow suggested treatments, and why they may or may not keep a tight grip on compulsive gambling behaviors and related problems. This qualitative research places special emphasis on gamblers’ progress and their opinions on existing and future services. The study shows that gamblers who decide to seek help normally do so as a last resort and because they feel powerless or hopeless about their situation. They wish to reestablish a “normal life” and learn how to control and understand the addiction that propels them inexorably into gambling’s vicious circle. However, many gamblers must try more than once to achieve their goals, with setbacks, relapses, and therapy dropouts being common. Many gamblers have mentioned the program’s lack of depth, the few available spaces, the excessive waiting periods that discourage more than one, and the lack of after-therapy support and follow-up. Even so, those who break the cycle are very grateful to their counselor or the organization that helped them. They speak of profound changes on a personal, financial, interpersonal, and professional level, and express their great appreciation for the advice on controlling their gambling urges. They also feel that they were listened to and accepted as they were, and that they have regained their self-esteem. The large variety of types of gamblers, their special problems, their conflicting needs and expectations with regard to treatment services, as well as their reasons for seeking help to solve their gambling-related problems suggest that services would benefit from being better adapted to each gambler’s situation. It thus seems important to develop flexible treatment programs that allow maximum leeway and latitude. |
