Title Investigating the drinking patterns of young people over the course of the evening at weekends Type Journal Article

Abstract Memory deficits lead to distortion when long recall periods are used to assess alcohol consumption. We used the recently developed Internet-based cell phone-optimised assessment technique (ICAT) to describe the drinkingpatterns of youngpeopleover the course of Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and to compare the amounts reported during the drinking sessions in question with those in the retrospective baseline assessment. Methods Using hyperlinks in text messages sent to their cell phones over five weeks, 183 young adults in French-speaking Switzerland completed a total of 8646 questionnaires at 8 pm, 9 pm, 10 pm, 11 pm, midnight and 11 am the next morning over 1441 evenings. Findings Participants consumed an average of three drinks on Thursday evenings, four on Friday evenings and five and a half on Saturday evenings. The multi-group and multi-level latent growth curves showed that while the difference was minimal at the beginning of the evening, consumption decreased over the course of the evening on Thursdays, remained about stable on Fridays and increased on Saturdays between both genders. The amounts indicated in the evening assessments were up to twice as high as those indicated retrospectively. Conclusions Using participants’ cell phones, ICAT appears to be a convenient method for collecting alcohol-related data throughout the evening. Due to the significant impact of eveningdrinkingpatterns on the total amount consumed and related consequences, it is important to prevent the average increase of drinking that is likely to occur on Saturday evenings among youngpeople.

Title Zertifizierung von Einrichtungen der Sucht-Rehabilitation – Erwartungen und Erfolge = Certification of institutions for addiction treatment : expectations and rates of success Type Journal Article

Aim: Because little was known about the internal and external effects of successful certification, this study aimed to determine what these effects are. Method: Certified members of the German Society of Quality Management in Addiction Therapy («deQus») were asked to complete a questionnaire on their initial expectations about the internal and external effects of obtaining certification and the success that they actually achieved. Results: The goal of the institutions to provide proof of quality to certification agencies was not achieved. However, the improvement in quality that they realized exceeded initial expectations. Conclusions: The legal obligation set by the German Federal Study Group for Rehabilitation (BAR) that institutions obtain certification has led to the expectation that in future certification will be accepted as proof of a high level of quality.

Title Long-Term Effects of “Ecstasy” : Use on Serotonin Transporters of the Brain Investigated by PET Type Journal Article
Year 2003 Publication Journal of nuclear medicine Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 44 Issue (down) 3 Pages 375-384
Keywords addiction; AOD dependence; chemical addiction; ecstasy
Abstract Alterations of the serotonergic system due to ecstasy consumption have been extensively documented in recent literature. However, reversibility of these neurotoxic effects still remains unclear. To address this question, PET was performed using the serotonin transporter (SERT) ligand 11C-(+)-McN5652 in a total of 117 subjects subdivided into 4 groups: actual ecstasy users (n = 30), former ecstasy users (n = 29), drug-naive control subjects (n = 29), and subjects with abuse of psychoactive agents other than ecstasy (n = 29). Methods: About 500 MBq 11C-(+)-McN5652 were injected intravenously. Thirty-five scans were acquired according to a dynamic scan protocol of 90 min using a full-ring whole-body PET system. Transaxial slices were reconstructed using an iterative method. Individual brains were transformed to a template defined earlier. Distribution volume ratios (DVRs) were derived by application of a reference tissue approach for reversible binding. Gray matter of the cerebellum served as reference. SERT-rich brain regions—mesencephalon, putamen, caudate, and thalamus—were selected for the evaluation of SERT availability using volumes of interest predefined in the template. Results: Compared with drug-naive control subjects, the DVR in actual ecstasy users was significantly reduced in the mesencephalon (P = 0.004) and the thalamus (P = 0.044). The DVR in former ecstasy users was very close to the DVR in drug-naive control subjects in all brain regions. The DVR in polydrug users was slightly higher than that in the drug-naive control subjects in all SERT-rich regions (not statistically significant). Conclusion: Our findings further support the hypothesis of ecstasy-induced protracted alterations of the SERT. In addition, they might indicate reversibility of the availability of SERT as measured by PET. However, this does not imply full reversibility of the neurotoxic effects.
