Title Von der Psychoanalyse bis zur Kurzintervention – psychosoziale Ansätze zur Behandlung alkoholbedingter Störungen der letzten 75 Jahre Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication SuchtMagazin Abbreviated Journal
Volume 40 Issue (down) 6 Pages 49-51
Keywords alcohol; AODR disorder; history of AOD public policy; research; patient; treatment program

Title Real-Time Monitoring als Werkzeug zur Wirkungsmessung Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication SuchtMagazin Abbreviated Journal
Volume 41 Issue (down) 6 Pages 21-25
Keywords treatment and maintenance; residential facility; monitoring; treatment outcome; forecast; aftercare; lifestyle

Title Prevention and treatment of hepatitis C in injection drug users Type Journal Article
Year 2002 Publication Hepatology Abbreviated Journal
Volume 36 Issue (down) 5b Pages 210-219
Keywords health promotion; HIV infection; Aids
Abstract Injection drug users constitute the largest group of persons infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the United States, and most new infections occur in drug users. Controlling hepatitis C in the U.S. population, therefore, will require developing, testing, and implementing effective prevention and treatment strategies for persons who inject drugs. Fortunately, a substantial body of research and clinical experience exists on the prevention and management of chronic viral diseases among injection drug users. The need to implement interventions to stop the spread of HCV among drug users is critical. The capacity of substance-use treatment programs need to be expanded to accommodate all who want and need treatment. Physicians and pharmacists should be educated in how to provide access to sterile syringes and to teach safe injection techniques, both of which are lifesaving interventions. The treatment of hepatitis C in drug users requires an interdisciplinary approach that brings together expertise in treating hepatitis and caring for drug users. Treatment decisions should be made individually by patients with their physicians, based on a balanced assessment of risks and benefits and the patient’s personal values. Physicians should carefully assess, monitor, and support adherence and mental health in all patients, regardless of whether drug use is known or suspected. Research is needed to better understand how best to prevent and treat hepatitis C in substance users. In the meantime, substantial progress can be made if existing knowledge and resources are brought to bear.

Title How high : quantity as a predictor of cannabis-related problems Type Journal
Year 2008 Publication Harm reduction journal Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue (down) 5; 29.05.2008 Pages 8
Keywords AOD use; AOD consumption; cannabis; health; AODR disorder; adult; study; United States
Abstract Background: Research on cannabis use has emphasized frequency as a predictor of problems. Studies of other drugs reveal that frequency relates to psychological and physiological outcomes, but quantity also plays an important role. In the study of cannabis, quantity has been difficult to assess due to the wide range of products and means of consumption. Methods: The present study introduces three new measures of quantity, and examines their contribution to cannabis-related problems. Over 5,900 adults using cannabis once or more per month completed an internet survey that inquired about use, dependence, social problems and respiratory health. In addition to detailing their frequency of cannabis use, participants also reported three measures of quantity: number of quarter ounces consumed per month, usual intensity of intoxication, and maximum intensity of intoxication. Results: Frequency of use, monthly consumption, and levels of intoxication predicted respiratory symptoms, social problems and dependence. What is more, each measure of quantity accounted for significant variance in outcomes after controlling for the effects of frequency. Conclusion: These findings indicate that quantity is an important predictor of cannabis-related outcomes, and that the three quantity measures convey useful information about use.
