  Abstract Die Hepatitis C, die durch ein auf dem Blutweg übertragenes Virus verursacht wird, hat weltweit eine grosse medizinische, epidemiologische und gesundheitsökonomische Bedeutung. Die Infektion mit dem Hepatitis-C-Virus (HCV) verläuft in 60-80 % der Fälle chronisch und kann zu schwerwiegenden Folgeerkrankungen wie Leberzirrhose und Leberzellkarzinom führen. In Deutschland leben schätzungsweise 400.000 bis 500.000 Menschen mit einer chronischen HCV-Infektion. Das Risiko einer Virusübertragung durch Blutprodukte hat sich seit 1990 durch die routinemässige Spenderuntersuchung drastisch verringert und beschränkt sich auf äusserst seltene Ausnahmefälle. Weiterhin relativ stark gefährdet ist die Bevölkerungsgruppe mit intravenösem Drogenkonsum. In den letzten Jahren wurde die medikamentöse Therapie der chronischen Hepatitis C weiter verbessert. Mit den neuen Kombinationstherapien liegen die Heilungschancen in Abhängigkeit vom Virus-Genotyp inzwischen bei 50 % bis 75 %. Da ein wirksamer Impfstoff nicht zur Verfügung steht, müssen Präventionsstrategien auf eine weitere Minimierung der Übertragungsrisiken zielen.
