Abstract: Das heutige Schweizer Institut für Sucht- und Gesundheitsforschung ISGF entstand aus einer nationalen und lokalen Krise im Zusammenhang mit dem sprunghaft angestiegenen intravenösen Drogenkonsum und der damit verbundenen Aids-Epidemie. Die Umsetzung einer innovativen Drogenpolitik schuf einen Bedarf an konzeptioneller und evaluativer wissenschaftlicher Arbeit, um neue Ansätze verfügbar zu machen. Die weitere Entwicklung des Instituts folgte den sich verändernden Suchtproblemen, aber auch dem veränderten Selbstverständnis der SuchtmittelkonsumentInnen und den Zugangswegen zu diesen. Die Arbeit des Instituts blieb lokal, national und international gefragt, bei intensiver auch institutioneller Vernetzung.
